When considering cosmetic surgery, it is important that you are fully informed on all aspects of the procedure that you are seeking. Through our brochures and information pack we aim to provide appropriate guidance until such a time that a full and confidential consultation with a consultant surgeon can be arranged.
What is lip augmentation?
Lip enhancement and augmentation is desirable in people with thin lips which may be congenital or part of the ageing process.
Procedures available include temporary or permanent (semi permanent) enhancement.
Temporary augmentation involves the use of biological fillers (mostly of hyaluronic gel) e.g. Restylane, aquamid, juvederm etc which are injected into the vermillion to produce a ‘Paris’ pout or into the lip itself to increase bulk. Their effect lasts between 4-6 months
Fat harvested from the abdomen or thighs can also be used to enhance the lips. Usually, as only about 70% of the fat survives it is necessary to repeat the processs in which case unused material is stored in the fridge. Swelling of the lip maybe marked when fat is employed but this settles within days.
Permanent (or semi permanent) lip augmentation employs human dermis (the deeper layer of the skin) from the patient or commercially available (alloderm). The material is introduced in strips through small cuts in the mucosa at the ends of the lips. These defects are closed with sutures.
An alternative graft to dermis is fescia (outer covering of muscle) obtained from the temple area under the scalp. |
